How to fix text typed in the wrong keyboard layout on a Mac

You start typing, look up — and the screen says "ghbdtn" instead of "привет". Here is why it happens and how to turn the text back into normal words quickly.

Why it happens

Every key on the keyboard carries a Latin letter and, for example, a Russian one. If you forget to switch the input language, the same key presses produce different text: "привет" comes out as "ghbdtn", "как дела" as "rfr ltkf", and the English "hello" typed with the Russian layout becomes "руддщ". The same happens for other pairs, such as Ukrainian or Kazakh with English, and for Uzbek: "Salom" typed with the Russian layout appears as "Ыфдщь".

It usually happens when you move from one window to another. The language indicator in the menu bar is small and easy to miss. If macOS has "Automatically switch to a document's input source" turned on, each window keeps its own layout, so after switching windows the language may not be the one you expected.

The text isn't "broken": every letter simply sits on the key of its neighbour in the other layout. That is why it can be fixed automatically, without retyping.

Option 1: retype it

The obvious way: delete the text, switch the layout and type it again. On a Mac, the default shortcut for switching the input source is ⌃ Control + Space, and newer keyboards also have a 🌐 key.

For one word that is fine. But if you have already typed a whole sentence, you have to type it twice — and watch the layout the second time.

Option 2: an online layout converter

If you only have a browser at hand, paste the text into a converter that maps each character to the key it sits on in the other layout. TypeCorrect has a free online layout converter (its interface is in Russian): paste the text, and the fixed version appears next to it. It works in the browser and does not send your text anywhere.

Option 3: double Shift with TypeCorrect

Copying text to a browser and back is still extra work. On a Mac you can skip it: TypeCorrect fixes the text right where you typed it.

  1. Put the cursor right after the word typed in the wrong layout — or select the passage.
  2. Press Shift twice.
  3. TypeCorrect replaces the text with the correct version and switches the layout, so you can keep typing.

It works in any app: chats, browsers, mail, editors. Your text never leaves the Mac, and password fields are always skipped. TypeCorrect is free for 7 days with no card; after that the license is $5, once, with no subscription.

Common examples

  • "ghbdtn" is "привет"
  • "rfr ltkf" is "как дела"
  • "cgfcb,j" is "спасибо": the comma sits on the key of the Russian "б"
  • "руддщ" is "hello" typed with the Russian layout
  • "Ыфдщь" is the Uzbek "Salom" typed with the Russian layout

How to make fewer layout mistakes

You can't remove them completely — sooner or later the language will be wrong. But a few macOS settings help you notice earlier.

  • Show the Input menu. In System Settings → Keyboard → Input Sources, turn on "Show Input menu in menu bar". The current layout will be visible next to the clock.
  • Pick a switching method you like. Some people prefer ⌃ Control + Space, others the 🌐 key or Caps Lock.
  • Decide whether each window needs its own layout. "Automatically switch to a document's input source" is handy if you write in different languages in different apps. If the layout jumps unexpectedly, try turning it off.

Frequently asked questions

How do I fix text typed in the wrong keyboard layout?

Put the cursor after the word or select the text and press Shift twice with TypeCorrect — it replaces the text with the correct version and switches the layout. Without the app, you can use an online converter or retype the text.

What does "ghbdtn" mean?

It is the Russian word "привет" ("hello") typed with the English layout active: the keys are the same but the language is wrong. In the same way "rfr ltkf" is "как дела".

Does TypeCorrect work with languages other than Russian?

Yes. TypeCorrect works with any two keyboard layouts you have enabled in macOS, including Ukrainian, Kazakh and Uzbek. Uzbek in Latin script is typed with the English (ABC) layout, so "Ыфдщь" typed with the Russian layout becomes "Salom" and back.

Is my text sent anywhere?

No. The text is read at the moment you press Shift twice, fixed on your Mac, and never stored or sent anywhere. The app goes online only to check the license and for updates.

How much does TypeCorrect cost?

It is free for 7 days with no card. After that the license is $5, once, with no subscription, and updates are free. It runs on macOS 13 and later, on Apple silicon and Intel Macs.
