The best wrong keyboard layout switchers for Mac in 2026
Typed "ghbdtn" instead of "привет", or "руддщ" instead of "hello"? A layout switcher fixes it for you. Here are ten Mac apps that do it today, what each one is good at, and how to pick.
The short answer
- Best overall: TypeCorrect — double Shift fixes the last word or any selection, and the optional Smart switch fixes words automatically on Space after a dictionary check. Works with any two macOS layouts and recognises Uzbek (Latin) words. Free for 7 days, then $9.90 once.
- Best free and open source: RuSwitcher — a tap fixes the last word or the selection; automatic mode is in beta.
- Best for many alphabets: Boomkey — manual fix for Latin, Cyrillic, Greek, Hebrew, Arabic-script, Georgian and Armenian layouts; $14.99 once.
- Automatic English–Russian on a subscription: Caramba Switcher.
- Free, automatic, English–Ukrainian–Russian: SwitchFix.
What a wrong-layout switcher does
If you write in two languages with different alphabets — English and Russian, Ukrainian, Kazakh, Uzbek, Hebrew and so on — sooner or later you type a word or a whole sentence with the wrong input source active. A layout switcher converts that text to the layout you meant and switches the input source, so you don't have to delete and retype.
There are two ways to do it:
- Manual: you press a key and the app fixes the last word or the selected text. Nothing changes unless you ask.
- Automatic: the app checks each word as you finish it and fixes the ones typed in the wrong layout. Convenient — but a careless switcher also "fixes" names, abbreviations, logins and code you typed on purpose.
The best switchers let you use both, and check a dictionary before they change anything on their own.
How we compared them
- Accuracy: does it change only text that really was typed in the wrong layout?
- Control: can you fix a selection, and undo a fix instantly?
- Languages: which layouts and which languages does it handle?
- Privacy: does your text stay on the Mac?
- Price and maintenance: free, one-time or subscription — and is it still updated?
1. TypeCorrect — best overall
A native menu bar app for macOS 13 and later, on Apple silicon and Intel Macs, signed and notarized.
- Manual by default: put the cursor after a word typed in the wrong layout, or select any passage, and press Shift twice. The text is replaced in place and the input source switches.
- Smart switch (optional, off by default): turn on *Smart switch (automatic)* in Preferences → General, and a wrong-layout word is fixed as soon as you press Space — only when it isn't in the macOS spelling dictionary for your current layout but its conversion is a real word in the other one. English, Russian and Uzbek (Latin) words are recognised, plus any language macOS has a spelling dictionary for; Uzbek works through a word list built into TypeCorrect, because macOS has no Uzbek dictionary. Short words, links, code, numbers and password fields are skipped, and a double Shift right after a fix undoes it.
- Any two layouts: it uses the real macOS layout tables, so ANSI, ISO and JIS keyboards map exactly.
- Private: text is converted on the Mac and never sent anywhere. The app goes online only for the license, updates and anonymous usage statistics, which you can turn off.
- Price: free for 7 days with no card, then $9.90 once — no subscription, free updates, one Mac at a time.
Why it's our pick: a precise manual fix for the last word or any selection, an automatic mode that checks a dictionary first, an instant undo, support for Uzbek alongside English and Russian, and a one-time price.
2. RuSwitcher — best free option
A free open-source menu bar app (MIT) for macOS 13 and later, on Apple silicon and Intel. The original project is rashn/RuSwitcher.
- Manual: a tap of a configurable trigger key (Option by default; Command, Control, Shift, single or double tap) fixes the last word or the selection. It retypes the text rather than pasting it.
- Automatic (beta, off by default): checks each word against the macOS dictionary when you press space — only for language pairs that macOS has a dictionary for.
- Layouts: any installed pair; Hebrew is experimental.
- Privacy: its site states no telemetry, no analytics and no network access.
- Latest stable version: 3.4.0 (27 September 2026), with 3.5 in beta.
3. Boomkey — for many alphabets
A layout fixer from the UK studio Poteam, for macOS 14 and later.
- Manual: select text and press Double-Shift. Works with pairs of alphabetic layouts in Latin, Cyrillic, Greek, Hebrew, Arabic script (including Persian and Urdu), Georgian and Armenian.
- Automatic (beta): fixes the last word on space for English, Ukrainian, Belarusian, Hebrew and Russian.
- Price: $14.99 once after a 7-day trial; two Macs per license.
4. Caramba Switcher — automatic, by subscription
An automatic switcher and autocorrector for English and Russian, from the creator of Punto Switcher. The Mac version needs macOS 12 or later. A double Shift undoes a conversion.
- Price: in the Mac App Store, a trial and then $6.99 a year; on its own site, 3 free days and then 499 ₽ a year for 3 Macs.
- Latest version: 2026.10.07.
5. SwitchFix — free and automatic
A free open-source app (MIT) for macOS 13 and later, for English, Ukrainian and Russian.
- Automatic: checks words on space, Return or Tab. Hotkey mode: Control + Shift + Space by default, also for a selection.
- Undo: Caps Lock or ⌘Z within 5 seconds.
- Releases are not notarized, so macOS will warn you when you first open it.
6. LangSwitcher — free, manual
A free open-source app (MIT) for macOS 13 and later. Select text — or let it detect the last line or word — and press Shift twice to convert it. It handles English, Russian, German, French and Spanish layouts. It does not correct text automatically as you type. Its README states that no data leaves your Mac.
7. Rekey — automatic, free beta
A free beta for macOS 13 and later that detects the wrong layout as you type and corrects it automatically; ⌘Z within 5 seconds undoes. Its language list covers many Latin-script languages plus Ukrainian, Belarusian, Bulgarian, Greek, Hebrew, Arabic and others — but Russian is not on it. There is no manual hotkey mode.
8. TypeSwitcher — free, English–Russian–Ukrainian
A free utility for Mac and Windows that fixes text typed in the wrong layout between English, Russian and Ukrainian. Its site promises no ads, no paid tier and no telemetry. The minimum macOS version and the hotkey are not stated on its site.
9. MetaWhisp — a voice app with a layout fixer
MetaWhisp is mainly a voice and dictation app, but its free tier includes a layout fixer for U.S. English and Russian: automatic on space or punctuation, plus double Shift for a selection. It needs macOS 14 and an Apple silicon Mac.
10. Punto Switcher for Mac
The best-known switcher on Windows. Yandex still offers version 2.1 for Mac, but the release page gives neither a release date nor system requirements, so check how it behaves on your version of macOS before relying on it.

Which one should you choose?
- You want a fix when you ask, plus automatic help you can trust, with a one-time price: TypeCorrect.
- You write Uzbek in Latin: TypeCorrect — its Smart switch recognises Uzbek words through a built-in word list.
- You want free and open source: RuSwitcher, or LangSwitcher if you only need a manual fix.
- You switch between many alphabets (Hebrew, Arabic, Georgian, Armenian): Boomkey or RuSwitcher.
- You want everything automatic for English and Russian, and also use Windows: Caramba Switcher.
Whatever you pick, add both of your layouts in System Settings → Keyboard → Input Sources first; every switcher works between the layouts macOS has enabled.
Frequently asked questions
What is the best wrong keyboard layout switcher for Mac?
For most people, TypeCorrect: a double Shift fixes the last word or a selection, the optional Smart switch fixes words automatically after a dictionary check, text stays on the Mac, and it costs $9.90 once after a 7-day free trial. The best free option is RuSwitcher; for many alphabets, Boomkey; for automatic English–Russian switching on a subscription, Caramba Switcher.
Is there a Punto Switcher for Mac?
Yandex offers Punto Switcher 2.1 for Mac, without a release date or system requirements on its page. Actively maintained alternatives include TypeCorrect, RuSwitcher, Boomkey, Caramba Switcher and SwitchFix.
Is there a free keyboard layout switcher for Mac?
Yes: RuSwitcher, SwitchFix and LangSwitcher are free and open source, Rekey is a free beta, and TypeSwitcher is free. TypeCorrect can be tried free for 7 days without a card.
Can a Mac switch the keyboard layout automatically when I type in the wrong language?
macOS itself doesn't fix text typed in the wrong layout. Apps such as TypeCorrect (with Smart switch on), Caramba Switcher, SwitchFix, Rekey and the beta modes of RuSwitcher and Boomkey do it automatically.
Will an automatic switcher change words I typed on purpose?
That is the main risk of automatic switching. TypeCorrect's Smart switch is off by default, skips links, code, numbers and short words, changes a word only when a dictionary confirms it, and a double Shift right after undoes the fix and leaves that word alone for the rest of the session.
Which switcher works with Uzbek, Kazakh or Ukrainian layouts?
TypeCorrect and RuSwitcher work with any two layouts enabled in macOS, including Uzbek, Kazakh and Ukrainian. TypeCorrect's Smart switch also recognises Uzbek (Latin) words. SwitchFix, Boomkey and TypeSwitcher support Ukrainian.
